Memorial Stadium

The University's Memorial Stadium, completed in 1924, was built through a campaign to raise private funds honoring Illinois students killed in World War I. Designed by the Chicago firm of Holabird and Roche, the stadium is contained within an imposing shell which cleverly introduces a majestic colonnade in harmony with the Georgian buildings designed and erected at the same time. The stadium has a seating capacity of 71,227. Original plans with a campanile, fountains, and monumental approaches envisaged far more elaborate surroundings than were ever actually accomplished.
