In the general courses a minimum of prescribed work is laid out 'for the first two years. The whole of the work of the first year, and part of that of the second, is prescribed. The work for the rest of the course is elective. Within the limits of the prescribed work, however, the student is permitted a choice of lines of work. In choosing his electives, each student must select at least two subjects from the major electives. In the choice of his electives other than his major work the student may take a minimum of work in a maximum number of subjects, or he may take a maximum amount of work in the minimum number of subjects necessary to fill up his time according to the rules of the University. The elective courses open to the students of the College include subjects from the Colleges of Science and Engineering. The sciences are not an integral part of the work of the College, but the training derived from their study is so important a part of a liberal education that every student of the College is earnestly advised to extend his study of them so far as may be. THE SPECIALIZED COURSE, OR GROUP, SYSTEM A specialized, or group, course is one which contains at least two years of major work in a single subject preceding the senior year, followed by an additional year of major work in that subject, and the writing of an acceptable thesis. No student may be enrolled in a specialized course without the permission of the head of the department in which he wishes to do his principal work, and each student who wishes to be so enrolled must specify the course he desires to enter not later than the beginning of his junior year. In the specialized course, or group, system the prescribed work is the same as in the general course system. The other credits necessary for graduation are to be obtained in the subjects of the group which the student enters. (See requirements for graduation, below.)
