248 UNCVERSITY OF ILLINOIS appointing some candidate first entitled to a vacancy in some other county. Candidates to be eligible to a state scholarship must be at least sixteen years of age, and must have been residents of their respective counties for the year preceding the examination. A student holding a state scholarship who shall make it appear to the satisfaction of the President of the University that he requires leave of absence for the purpose of earning funds to defray his expenses while in attendance may, in the discretion of the President, be granted such a leave of absence, and may be allowed a period not exceeding six years from the commencement thereof for the completion of his course at said University. The law contemplates that the candidate who passes this competitive examination should afterwards pass the regular entrance examination to the University. It has been thought best to combine these examinations so that the successful candidate may be admitted to the University without further examination. To this end the examination will be held on the first Saturday in June and the Friday preceding (June 3 and 4, 1898, and June 2 and 3, 1899). The subjects for examination will be the same as stated under the head of "Admission by Examination," pp. 29-35. Any person, whether a candidate for a scholarship or not, may be examined for admission to the University at these state scholarship examinations. MILITARY Students who have gained six term-credits in class room military instruction and six such credits in drill practice, are eligible for appointment as commissioned officers of the battalion. Those attaining this rank may be awarded special scholarships, good for one year, and equal in value to the University term fees for the same length of time.
