The University.

ILLINOIS INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY.

HISTORY.

The University was founded by a grant of public lands made by Congress for the. establishment of colleges of Agriculture, and the Mechanic Arts. It was chartered by the State, in February, 1867, and. was formally inaugurated March, n t h , 1868. It is both State and National in character, having received its endowment from Congress, and its equipment from the State, with large donations amounting to more than $400,000 from Champaign County. In the autumn of ,1871 the University was opened for the instruction of female students, and now it offers its advantages to all classes of society, without regard to sex, sect, or condition.
