QUESTIONS USED IN THE EXAMINATION

OF CANDIDATES i'OE ADMISSION TO THE

ILLINOIS INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY, IN 1868.

No examination was deemed satisfactory in which the candidate did not answer correctly 70 per cent, of the questions in each study.

ORTHOGRAPHY.

1. What does Orthography include? 2. How many elementary sounds in the English language ? 3. What letters might be spared from our alphabet as expressing no additional sound ? 4. Write the plurals of lady, and day, and give the rule. 5. When a word receives a suffix which begins with a vowel, what is the rule in regard to doubling the final consonant ? 6. How are derivative words formed ? 7. Give words having the following prefixes and suffixes, and define each

word: ad, con, hi, ni/b, merit, ship.

READING. 1. What is Emphasis'! 2. How many kinds are there ? 3.
