M A T T E R S P R E S E N T E D B Y PRESIDENT KINLEY The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR H. M. WESTERGAARD (1) A request from Dr. H. M . Westergaard, Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, approved by the Head of the Department, Professor Enger, and the Assistant Dean of the College, for leave of absence without pay during the academic year 1929-30 to accept a position as technical expert in the Department of the Interior. I submit this without recommendation. O n motion of M r . Barr, this leave w a s granted. It w a s voted that the B o a r d looks with disapproval o n requests from m e m b e r s of the staff for leave of absence so near the time for beginning w o r k . LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR MISS M. A. SOUDER (a) A recommendation from Dean Mumford that Miss M. A. Souder, Associate i n H o m e Management Extension, be given a leave of absence for the month of September without pay on account of illness. I authorized this leave on the terms suggested. Since Miss Souder is doing extension work her absence does not interfere with regular University work. I request confirmation of m y action. O n m o t i o n of M r s . Grigsby, this action w a s confirmed.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR MISS HELEN E. MCCULLOUGH

(3) Owing to illness, Miss Helen E. McCullough, Associate in the Department of H o m e Economics, is not able to resume her duties at present. The Acting Head of the Department requests, with Dean Mumford's approval, that Miss McCullough be given a leave of absence on pay until October 1, pending developments. O n motion of M r s . Busey, this leave w a s granted. A t this point, M r . Blair took his place with the Board.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. ARTHUR RANDOLPH KELLY

(4) A recommendation of Professor E. T. Hiller, of the Department of Sociology, approved by the Dean of the College, that Arthur Randolph Kelly of 28 Chatham Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, be appointed Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology, for two years, at a yearly rate of $3500, the appointment to be effective when he reports for duty. O n motion of M r s . E v a n s , the President of the University w a s authorized to m a k e this appointment.

APPOINTMENT OF MR. RAY R. HAMM AS DIRECTOR OF THE PHOTOGRAPHIC A N D BLUE-PRINTING LABORATORIES

(5) On recommendation of the Superintendent of Business Operations and the Comptroller I appointed Mr. Ray R. H a m m of Champaign as Director of the Photographic and Blue-Printing Laboratories, beginning August 1, 1929, and continuing until August 31, 1930, at a salary of $208.33 Per month, to be paid out of the receipts of the Laboratories. I request confirmation of m y action. O n m o t i o n of M r . Trees, this action w a s confirmed. RESIGNATION OF PROFESSOR J. D. FITZ-GERALD (6) Professor J D. Fitz-Gerald of the Department of Romance Languages submitted . his resignation, effective September 1, 1929, in order to accept a position at the University of Arizona. I accepted the resignation. This report w a s received for record.
