PAYMENT OF BILL AGAINST CARTER ESTATE (40) The Comptroller requests authority to pay a bill of $50 out of the principal sum received by the University from the Executor of the Carter estate, for a grave marker ordered by Mr. Carter during his lifetime but which was not placed until recently. The bill was received after the Executor had settled with the University. I recommend approval. O n motion of M r s . Evans, this payment w a s authorized. TAX REHEARING DENIED (41) A report from Mr. A. R. Hall that the Supreme Court had denied application for a rehearing on the decision concerning the taxation of the Carter-Pennell farms. This report w a s received for record. ASHLAND AVENUE ASSESSMENT (42) At the January meeting of the Board (page 519) an appropriation of $279 was made to pay a special assessment due to the widening and improving of Ashland Avenue. In remitting this amount to the officials, the Comptroller, at m y direction, called attention to the fact that the University was making this payment as a voluntary matter, as the University property is not subject to assessment. The Comptroller reports that the City Collector has returned the remittance, advising him that the City was in error in making the assessment against the University property, and that the assessment has been removed. I recommend that the sum of $279 appropriated for this purpose be restored to the Reserve and Contingent Fund. O n motion of Dr. Noble, this recommendation w a s adopted. LaVERNE NOYES SCHOLARSHIP FUND (43) As a matter of information, I report that the trustee of the LaVerne Noyes Scholarship Fund has offered to the University thirty scholarships for this year and next, with the understanding that in all probability these will continue indefinitely. This report w a s received for record. SIZE OF PORTRAITS (44) A statement concerning the size of portraits presented to the University. This matter w a s referred to the President of the University for consideration and report. GIFT FROM WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS (45) A statement concerning a tablet offered by the Woman's Relief Corps of Illinois for the encouragement of excellence in the various branches of Military Science. O n motion of M r s . Evans, this gift w a s accepted. COOK COUNTY SCHOOL FOR NURSES (46) A statement that all negotiations with the authorities of Cook County concerning a school for nurses had been terminated. This report w a s received for record. ALUMNI DIRECTORY (47) A request for authority to proceed with the preparation of an Alumni Directory.
