H A R D W A R E F O R LIBRARY BUILDING (31) Bids for the hardware for the third unit of the N e w Library building. These bids were opened and recorded as follows: T h o m a s Conron Hardware C o m p a n y $1707 Holder Hardware C o m p a n y 1566 Russell & Erwin Manufacturing C o m p a n y . 1498 O n motion of Mrs. Evans, the contract w a s awarded to the Russell & Erwin Company, the low bidders. OFFER OF THE STANDARD OIL COMPANY OF INDIANA (32) The Standard Oil Company of Indiana offers the University a thousand dollars ($1,000) a year for "fundamental research on the nature of detonation in internal combustion engines" with the understanding that the fund is to be administered in accordance with the usual regulations of the University, but that not more than $300 of the $1,000 shall be used for apparatus. I recommend that this offer be accepted. O n motion of M r . Armstrong, this offer w a s accepted. GIFT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (33) Dean Ketchum reports that Mr. W . L. Abbott has offered to give the Department of Mechanical Engineering a pair of steam engine indicators, valued at $120. I have authorized Dean Ketchum to accept this gift. This report w a s received for record. ASSIGNMENT OF PERCIVAL LAND (34) I recommend that the recently acquired Percival Farm be assigned to the College of Agriculture for distribution among the various departments on approval of the President, and that the fence around that part of the pasture now used for the Animal Pathology work north of the front line of the Animal Pathology Building be removed, and that that area be assigned to general University purposes. O n motion of M r s . Grigsby, these recommendations were adopted. RENEWAL OF AGREEMENT FOR INVESTIGATION OF USE OF ELECTRICITY IN A G R I C U L T U R E (35) I have approved the renewal of the agreement entered into in 1925 (Board Minutes, February 11, 1925, page 171) and renewed in 1926 and 1927, with the Illinois State Electrical Association and the Central Illinois Public Service Company for a cooperative investigation of the use of electricity in agriculture. This extension covers the period from January 1 to September 1, 1928. This report w a s received for record. Reserve and Contingent Fund The unappropriated balance of the Reserve and Contingent Fund (estimated excess of income of the year over appropriations) at the beginning of the quarter was $343,637. Net deductions during the quarter totalled
