CHANGE IN REQUIREMENT IN THE CURRICULUM IN THE S C H O O L OF MUSIC (24.) On request of the faculty of the School of Music, the Senate recommends that the eight hours of English or American Literature required of third year students be changed to three hours of English or American Literature, the remaining five hours to be selected from any non-technical subjects including literature. On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, this recommendation was approved. COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATIONS IN ENGINEERING EXPERIMENT STATION (25) The following letter from Dean Ketchum: 304. Engineering Hall June 8, 1926 President David Kinley, 355 Administration Building Dear President Kinley: The Utilities Research Committee (representing the Commonwealth Edison Company, the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company, Public Service Company of Northern Illinois, Middle West Utilities Company, Chicago Rapid Transit Company, and Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad Company), has made the following appropriations for the two-year period covering June 1, 1926, to M a y 31, 1928: Investigation of boiler feed water treatment $6,500 Investigation of refractories 7,500 Investigation of ageing of porcelain 7,500 Investigation of car axle failures 6,500 Investigation of impact in steel structures 9,000 Investigation of methods of testing high-voltage cables 3,000 $40,000 These amounts aretocover a two-year period, although it is probable in some cases that the work will have been completed and the expenditures made in less time. It will be entirely agreeable to the Utilities Research Committee to have the agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and the Utilities Research Committee, dated M a y 22, 1924, extended by an interchange of letters in which the new subjects and appropriations are substituted for those mentioned in the original agreement. I wish to recommend that the above appropriations be accepted and authority be given to complete the details of the agreement as above outlined. Very truly yours, M . S. Ketchum I recommend that these funds be accepted and that authority be granted to extend the agreement referred to. On motion of Mr. Armstrong, these recommendations were approved. ADDITIONAL GIFT FROM CHEMICAL FOUNDATION (26) I report for record the receipt of an additional gift of $1000 from the Che ical Foundation for sewage research. This gift is given under the same conditions as the original grant of $1000 received in April and reported to the Board on M a y 16, 1925. This report w a s received for record.
