Appointments to the Institute for the Humanities, Chicago

(4) The chancellor at Chicago, on recommendation of the director of the Institute for the Humanities and with the concurrence of the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has recommended the following appointments of Fellows in the Institute for the Humanities for the Academic Year 1995-96 and for the program of research or study as indicated in each case.1 Fellows are released from teaching and administrative duties, normally for a year, so they can devote full effort to their research.

J O H N (assistant professor, history), "The Challenge of Private Enterprise: The Civil War and the Making of the Modern Communications Infrastructure in the United States" TIMOTHY F. MURPHY (associate professor, medical education), "Gay Science: The Ethics of Sexual Research" GREGORY S. HUTCHESON (assistant professor, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese), "Approaching 1492: The Scripting of National Identity in Pre-Modern Spain" MICHAEL DOBSON (assistant professor, English), "The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare" MITCHELL SCHWARZER (assistant professor, history of architecture and art), "The Category of Architecture in German Philosophical Aesthetics, 1750-1820" The vice president for academic affairs recommends approval. (5) The following new appointments to the faculty at the rank of assistant professor and above, and certain administrative positions, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. Positions in the University are classified in the following categories and are designated in the budget by the symbols indicated. A — Indefinite tenure N — Term appointment not eligible to be appointed for an indefinite term and not credited toward probationary period Q — Initial term appointment for a professor or associate professor Y — Twelve-month service basis 1-7 — Indicates the number of years of service which will be credited at the end of the contract period toward completion of the probationary period relating to tenure. Figures following a symbol indicate percentage of time if the appointment is on a part-time basis (e.g., N75 means one year on three-fourths time).

Chicago

HOUQI CHEN, assistant professor of surgical oncology, College of Medicine at Chicago, beginning February 15, 1995 (N), at an annual salary of $34,500.
