BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[October 4,

If, in addition to salaries, adequate provision is made for expenses, v/e should set aside a minimum of $5,000 per year. Here we have a total of $20,000. Undoubtedly a great deal can be done for less, and it is my hope that v/e shall be able to do something more this year. I think it would be well to follow out the recommendation of your committee to establish a permanent publicity committee to consist of the President of the Board and two other members to be appointed by him, with power to organize and get into action the bureau of publicity recommended in the report. If the Board does not see its way clear to adopt the whole program, it would be feasible perhaps to set aside $6,000 or $7,000 to employ a publicity man and try out some of these schemes for the present academic year. Personally I think it would be a mistake to try to drum up more students just now. We simply cannot take care of them. We should direct our publicity, or part of it, towards securing the co-operation of powerful organizations and individuals in the state for an immediate increase in the University's resources.

On motion of Mr. Abbott, this report was approved, and the sum of $5,000 was appropriated to be used in the work of publicity under the direction of Acting President Kinley. President Carr appointed the following standing committee on publicity: Mr. C. A. Trimble, Mr. W. L. Abbott, Mr. R. F. Carr.

VETERINARY COMMISSION (19) A recommendation from President Carr that the following Commission on Plans for a College of Veterinary Science (see page 508) be appointed: Mr. L. A. Merillat, of Chicago Mr. John Imboden, President of the Illinois Live Stock Association, Decatur Professor H. W. Mumford, Urbana Senator S. E. Lantz, Congerville Acting President Kinley, Urbana Dean Eugene Davenport, Urbana Mr. F. Edson White, Vice-President, Armour & Co., Chicago President Robert F. Carr, Chicago

On motion of Mr. Abbott, this Commission was appointed to consider this matter and to report its recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

REIMBURSEMENT OF DR. D. A. K. STEELE (20) A statement that in connection with the transfer of the stock of the College of Physicians and Surgeons to the University, a suit was instituted against Dr. D. A. K. Steele, who was active in collecting this stock as a gift to the University, for the recovery of the value of some stock which had been donated, the donor afterwards changing her mind. Dr, Steele asks that he be reimbursed for this expenditure, which amounts in all, according to the bill submitted, to $1,790.13.

Action on this matter was deferred.

ADVERTISEMENTS IN FINE ARTS JOURNAL (21) A request from Secretary W. H. Browne of the College of Medicine for authority to insert an advertisement of the Chicago colleges in the "Fine Arts Journal".

No action was taken in this matter.
