(33) A letter from Dean C. R. T. H e r t of the American Creosoting Company, Louisville, Kentucky. May 28, 1918 President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois

M Y DEAR PRESIDENT J A M E S :

On February 8, 1916, the Board of Trustees authorized you to approve a proposal for a cooperative investigation on the coking of coal, to be conducted by the Engineering Experiment Station in cooperation with Mr. A. T. H e r t of Louisville^ Kentucky. Under this agreement Professor S. W . P a r r and Dr. T . E. Layng have been engaged during the past years in research work on the coking of coal on a scale considerably larger than that of the original laboratory investigations conducted by Professor Parr. Apparently the results of this cooperative investigation seem to indicate that the process discovered by Professor P a r r has great commercial possibilities and that consequently the process itself may become exceedingly valuable if properly protected.
