LOANS OF LANTERN SLIDES AND SIMILAR EQUIPMENT

(18) A request for authority to lend lantern slides and similar equipment to high schools. President E. / . James, University of Illinois

DEAR PRESIDENT JAMES :

The classics department has requests now and then for the loan of slides and costumes to high schools for the purpose of illustrating in class some aspect of classical life, or for furnishing an evening's entertainment for a part or all of a high school. It seems to the department that it is very desirable that the University respond to such requests, but it has never been told officially that it has any right to send out this material. I am therefore suggesting to you that I would be glad if the University would approve such action, provided always, that the expense of transportation and possible breakage is assumed by the party applying. Very sincerely yours,

H. J. BARTON

Chairman of Classical Department

On motion of Mrs. Evans, the President of the University was authorized to lend such material to high schools under regulations which he may approve.

Will you kindly send me a statement confirming the fact stated over the telephone, that the net proceeds of the half of the gross amount received by the University of Illinois Foot-Ball Team go to the University of Illinois? Very truly yours,

WALLACE HECKMAN

I have drafted this reply to this letter explaining the University's method of managing athletic affairs. November 10, 1917 Mr. Wallace Heckman, Esq., Counsel and Business Manager, University of Chicago

M Y DEAR MR. HECKMAN :

In answer to your inquiry, I beg to say that the University of Illinois delegates to the Athletic Association of the University the power to manage the athletic affairs of the University under rules prescribed by the Faculty.
