The increase in the expense of the Military Department has been most marked, owing to the increasing number in the regiment, the desire to make better provision for the department, and the charging to this department of certain items which belong properly to this account, but which have formerly been charged to other accounts. We have been compelled to propose a reduction in the appropriation for the museums from $15,000 to $7,500, but it is hoped that we may be able to make this partially good before the end of the year. It is very desirable that much more money should be spent in making collections in various departments and making those collections which we already have more available for students and faculty. Speaking generally, the budget for the present year is essentially the same as that for the past year.
