MEETING OF NOVEMBER 14, 1914.

A special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois was held at the University, in Urbana, at 12.30 p. m., on Saturday, .November 1.4, 1914, pursuant to the following notice which was sent out by the Secretary on November 6, 1914:

Upon the call of the President, Mr. W". L. Abbott, there will be a special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University, in Urbana, on Saturday, November 14, 1914, beginning at 12.30 p. m., to consider such matters as the committees of the board and the President of the University may submit, and such other business as may be duly presented.

When the board convened, the following members were present: Mr. Abbott, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Moore. Mr. Hoit came in a little later and recorded his vote on the actions already taken; and Mr. Dunne and Miss Watson joined the board during the recess. Prof. J. M. White, Supervising Architect, and Judge 0. A. Harker, Legal Counsel, were present during part of the meeting.

COMMITTEE ON RESOLUTIONS OF SYMPATHY FOR DR. JAMES.

The death of Mrs. James was announced and it was moved by Dr. Montgomery that President Abbott appoint a special committee to draft resolutions of sympathy for President James. The motion was carried. President Abbott appointed Dr. Montgomery and Superintendent Blair. The members of the committee retired for conference. On their return, Dr. Montgomery presented tile following resolutions and moved their adoption. The resolutions were adopted unanimously, by a rising vote.

RESOLUTIONS.

WHEREAS, The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois learn with

sorrow of the death of Mrs. Anna Margarethe James, wife of the honored President of the University of Illinois, who for thirty-five years has been his companion and co-worker, a constant source of counsel, strength, and inspiration in the exacting duties of his high office; be it Resolved, That the board offer to President James and the members of his family its sincere condolence in this their day of sorrow and express its hope that he and they may find that healing balm which comes down from the Mercy Seat.

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT'ABBOTT.

President Abbott presented for Dean Eugene Davenport, who was acting for President James, the following matters for consideration:

IMPORTATION OF CHEMICALS.

(1) A request from Dr. W. A. Noyes, Director of the Chemistry Laboratory, endorsed by Dean K. C. Babcock, for authority to place an order for the importation of chemicals and appartus for the year 1915-16, with the recommendation that the desired authority be given. Dean K. C. Babcoch, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. ability of placing bur annual order for importation of chemicals and apparatus from Germany much earlier than usual this year. I would respectfully ask permission from the Board of Trustees to place an order for the importation of chemicals and apparatus to an amount not exceeding $18,000. In order to be prepared to stock the students' lockers in the new building, and also because of the probability of higher prices on account of the war. I am asking for permission to place a larger order than usual. Permission was given for an order not to exceed $12,000 last year. We hope to' place the order by the first of February, 1915. It is necessary to place the order a number of months in advance so as to have the goods delivered in time for the beginning of school work next fall. The bills, however, would be paid, for the most part, from our appropriation for the year 1915-16. Yours respectfully,
