SUMMER 13.

SESSION.

URBANA, I I I . , J u n e 28, 1910.

Report of t h e director of t h e S u m m e r Session:

President E. J. James, Natural History Building: DEAR PRESIDENT J A M E S — I beg to submit t h e following r e p o r t on t h e w o r k of t h e S u m m e r Session since t h e opening on Monday, J u n e 20. T h e n u m b e r of s t u d e n t s now enrolled a t t h e University is 616. A t t h e Biological Station a t H a v a n a t h e r e were a t t h e close of last week t h i r t y n i n e s t u d e n t s in a t t e n d a n c e , m a k i n g t h e total enrollment for t h e session a t t h e p r e s e n t t i m e a t least 655. This is already a slight gain over t h e total enrollment of last year, which, a t t h e end of t h e n i n t h week, a m o u n t e d to j u s t 650. Of these 655 s t u d e n t s I believe t h a t fully one-half a r e teachers, a l t h o u g h I a m unable to s t a t e t h e exact proportion. Up to t h e p r e s e n t t i m e 205 scholarships have been accepted in lieu of t h e t u i t i o n fee. Those who have been teaching in t h e S t a t e d u r i n g t h e p a s t y e a r or who a r e u n d e r contract to teach d u r i n g t h e coming y e a r a r e entitled to these scholarships, provided t h a t they a r e qualified to enter t h e University as r e g u l a r s t u d e n t s . T h e •enrollment from outside of t h e State is about equal to t h a t of last y e a r ' s S u m m e r Session. T h e n u m b e r of g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t s is approximately t h r e e t i m e s as large t h i s s u m m e r as it w a s last s u m m e r . F r o m p r e s e n t indications, I believe t h a t we could extend t h e usefulness of t h e S u m m e r Session b y offering more w o r k in t h e College of Agriculture. T h e r e h a s been a very m a r k e d d e m a n d for a g r i c u l t u r a l courses t h i s year. I visited t h e Biological Station last F r i d a y a n d S a t u r d a y , a n d found t h a t t h e w o r k w a s progressing favorably, a l t h o u g h t h e enrollment is n o t so large as h a d been hoped. F r o m t h e s t a n d p o i n t of quality, however, t h e s t u d e n t s a r e all t h a t could be desired. T h e r e were thirty-nine s t u d e n t s enrolled a t t h e close of t h e week and all of these were either t e a c h e r s or s t u d e n t s p r e p a r i n g t o teach, A large n u m b e r of t h e m a r e g r a d u a t e students—in fact, t h e staff of instruction a t t h e s t a t i o n could not very effectively look after a larger n u m b e r of g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t s t h a n is now enrolled. The elementary courses, however, a r e not n e a r l y so well a t t e n d e d . ' T h e s t u d e n t body seemed to be very e n t h u s i a s t i c over t h e way in which t h e w o r k h a d s t a r t e d a n d I a m confident t h a t w i t h t h e i r aid in m a k i n g t h e w o r k of t h e station k n o w n d u r i n g a n o t h e r year, next s u m m e r ' s enrollment would show a large increase if it were decided to continue the work a t H a v a n a . Respectfully yours,

W. O. BAGLEY,

Director,
