Grindley, head of the research laboratory, upon the nutrition investigations now proceeding in the laboratory.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, March 8, 1910.

President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois: DEAR PRESIDENT JAMES—I wish hereby to report progress in the work of the Nutrition Investigations of this Laboratory. The report of- the saltpeter investigation has been pushed as rapidly as possible, so that at present we have 2,780 pages of manuscript, including tables, charts, diagrams, etc. The labor involved in attempting correctly and logically to arrange and discuss these experimental data, amounting to 1,850 printed pages (10x6% in.), is proving to be enormous. We have found it necessary to have the advice of Dr. Rietz of the Department of Mathematics in interpreting our results from the statistical standpoint. The first copy of the manuscript of the first four volumes of the report has been prepared while the manuscript of the first volume is now being typewritten for the last time. It is probable that this first volume will be approved by the commission and placed in the hands of the printers by May 1st. The results of this investigation are proving, upon continued study, to be more extensive and of greater fundamental importance to this field of research than was at first anticipated. We have published up to the present time sixteen papers based upon the data obtained from this saltpeter investigation. I enclose herewith the titles of these publications. In addition, since Sept., 1907, twenty-two other papers have been published from this laboratory. At present our editorial force is not sufficient in number and capacity to prepare promptly and accurately for publication the large mass of experimental data that we have on hand. Yours very truly,

H. S. GRINDLEY.
