CHANGE IN LAW ON ACCOUNTANCY. 5. Notice is hereby given to the board that an act passed by the last legislature affected the law relating to granting the diploma of certified public accountant in the following manner, namely : that at the examination to be held in May, 1908, and also in May, 1909, the requirement of preliminary education in the case of persons who have practiced accountancy for five years shall be waived. APPOINTMENTS. 6. The dean of the College Literature and Arts recommends that Dr. Chester N. Greenough of Harvard College be elected professor of English in the University of Illinois, work and salary to begin September 1, 1907. Professor Greenough is willing to accept said position at a salary of $3,000 per anum, on condition that if his work is satisfactory during the year 1907-08, he shall be made head of the department of English or chairman of the committee in management of the department, as the president may recommend; and his salary, beginning September 1, 1908, be increased to $3,500 per annum. If this recommendation is approved, it is with the understanding that such a statement may be made on behalt of the board of trustees to Dr. Greenough.

Voted that said appointment be made on the terms indicated.

7. The dean of the College of Literature and Arts recommends that Professor Campbell Bonner of the Peabody Normal College, Nashville, Tenn., be elected Assistant Professor of Classical Philology at a salary of $2000 per annum,.work and salary to beginn September 1, 1907.

Voted that said appointment be made.

8. In place of Assistant Professor Brooks, absent on leave for the coming year, I recommend that Dr. Otto E. Lessing be appointed Associate Professor of German for the academic year 1907-08 at a salary of $£,250, work and salary to begin September 1, 1907.

.Voted that said appointment be made.

9. I recommend the appointment of Mr. D. 0. McGovney as instructor in the Law School for the academic year 1907-08, at a salary of $1,800.

Voted that said appointment be made.

10. The Dean of the College of Literature and Arts recommends that Dr. Lawrence M. Larson be appointed Associate in History in the University of Illinois for the term of two years beginning September 1, 1907, at a salary of $1,500 per year.

Voted that said appointment be made.

11. The Dean of the College of Literature and Arts recommends that Mr. E. M. Halliday be appointed associate in English for the period of two years beginning September 1, 1907, at a salary of $1,500 per year.

Voted that said appointment be made.

THE RESIGNATION OF DIRECTOR GEORGE A. HUFF. 12. The board of trustees accepted the resignation of Director George A. Huff, at the last meeting, to take effect May 1, 1907. After conference with Director Huff, he expressed a willingness to withdraw his resignation and return to the- University, I took the liberty of authorizing such action, subject to the approval of the board of trustees. Director Huff was absent some ten days, which may, I presume, be considered an absence on leave.

Voted that the action of the president in permitting Mr. Huff to withdraw his resignation be approved.
