GENTLEMEN:—The energies of the Agricultural Experiment Station for the past two years have been directed chiefly along the following lines: The comparative efficiency of individual cows as to their ability to produce milk and fat from a given amount of food; the value of silage in beef production; the effect of an addition of small amounts of gluten meal to the corn ration in feeding for beef; the sources of contamination of milk; influence of selection upon the chemical composition of corn; effect of in-breeding upon corn; effect of de-tasseling and of deep and shallow cultivation; investigation into the types and breeds of corn raised in Illinois; suitability of Illinois for sugar production; various methods of treating seed oats for the prevention of smut; the fungous enemies of fruits and flowers; spraying fruit trees for canker worm and for apple scab; effect of spraying during bloom of fruit trees upon the lives of honeybees; characteristics of a great number of varieties of apples and grapes; the winter killing of fruit trees, and the publication of the following bulletins and circulars: Bulletin No. 53, 18,000, July, 1898,52 pp. The Chemistry of the Corn Kernel.
