P r e s i d e n t D r a p e r h a v i n g a n n o u n c e d t h a t h e was p l a n n i n g to t a k e a visit to E u r o p e d u r i n g t h e s u m m e r vacation, M r . S m i t h offered t h e following resolution: Besolved, That the Board learns with pleasure that President Draper will make a visit abroad during the summer vacation, and that it most heartily wishes him an enjoyable trip and a safe return. Mr. N i g h t i n g a l e offered t h e following to b e sent to t h e Associated P r e s s , and it was adopted a n d given i n c h a r g e of M r s . A b b o t t for transmission: The Trustees of the University of Illinois, through a special committee, made a thorough investigation of the rumors in the public press that at a demonstration of the students on the evening of April 24, 1899, Governor Tanner was burned in effigy, and find that the whole matter was practically a canard, that the demonstration, such as it was, occurred a mile and a half away from the University grounds, that no students can be found who were identified with the affair, and that on the other hand the Faculty and student body warmly appreciate the interest taken by Governor Tanner in advancing the affairs of the State University. The trustees greatly regret that the press should have given credence to rumors with so little foundation in fact. O n m o t i o n of M c K a y it was voted t h a t t h e C o m m i t t e e on I n s t r u c t i o n b e directed to investigate t h e condition of affairs i n t h e electric engineering department. Mr. M c K a y r e q u e s t e d t h a t h e be excused from g o i n g with t h e Comm i t t e e on A r g r i c u l t u r e to visit a g r i c u l t u r a l i n s t i t u t i o n s a n d moved t h a t M r . B u l l a r d be asked to take h i s place, a n d t h e m o t i o n prevailed. Mr. S m i t h offered t h e following resolution w h i c h was a d o p t e d : Resolved, That the Board of Trustees has full confidence in Governor Tanner's friendship for the University of Illinois and that we fully appreciate, and that we thank him for, his friendly assistance given to the University t personally and officially. T h e B o a r d adjourned.
