URBANA, ILLINOIS, September 20, 1897.

To the President and Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN:—I beg leave to inform you that, with the consent and approval of the President of the University, I have accepted the Governor's appointment and commission as a member of the State Board of Examiners of Architects, as the law requires a member of the Faculty of this University to serve on this Board. My work will be so arranged that none of my classes will be omitted or postponed, and I sincerely believe that the advantages resulting to the University and to the architectural department will abundantly compensate the institution for the time that I shall necessarily be absent in attendance on the meetings of the Board. Had 1 thought otherwise, I should have declined the appointment. Very respectfully submitted,
