The following report was received from t h e Experiment Station: URBANA, I I I . , July 31, 1*894. To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: The executive committee of t h e Agricultural Experiment Station respectfully reports t h a t Mr. E. H, Farrington, chemist of t h e Station, has presented his resignation of t h a t position in order to accept a position in connection with t h e University of Wisconsin. While regretting t h e loss of his valuable services, t h e committee recommends t h e acceptance of his resignation to take effect August 1st. The routine work of the chemist's office can be carried on for a short time by t h e assistant chemist, and it is recommended t h a t no formal action be taken in regard to filling the position of chemist until t h e September meeting of t h e board of direction and of t h e board of trustees. The committee also reports that, through its oversight at t h e last meeting of t h e board of direction, no provision was made for t h e continuance of experiments under the direction of Professor Forbes in t h e destruction of the chinch bugs. The matter had been discussed by t h e board of direction, and in accordance with the requests of Professor Forbes and the view of t h e board of direction, t h e committee recommends t h a t authority be given for t h e expenditure of a sum not exceeding $250 in such experiments. I t may be proper for t h e committee officially to call the attention of t h e board of trustees to t h e fact t h a t congress has as yet made no appropriation for t h e Experiment Stations for t h e fiscal year beginning July 1, 1894. I t is believed t h a t there is no probability t h a t t h e usual appropriation will not be made. Respectfully submitted,

G. E . MORROWr, j
