To the Board of Trustees of the University of I Illinois. GENTLEMEN : Your committee recommends t h a t an appropriation from the state appropriation for taxes paid by t h e treasurer be made for taxes on lands in Minnesota. Also t h a t t h e president and secretary be directed to draw upon t h e Auditor of Public Accounts such orders as t h e law requires, in order t h a t he may issue to t h e treasurer of t h e University his warrants upon the state treasurer for the amounts appropriated by the legislature to the University of Illinois and to t h e State Laboratory of Natural History. Your committee further recommends t h a t from t h e appropriations for the State Laboratory of Natural History assignments be made for the quarter beginning July 1, 1893. Respectfully submitted,

Mr. McLean offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Besolved, T h a t a special committee of three members of this board, and Drs. Burrill and Forbes, be appointed for t h e purpose of obtaining such material from the World's Columbian Exposition as will be of value to t h e University; and t h a t t h e sum of $2,000 from t h e state appropriation be appropriated to be used in purchasing such material, for delivering, and other expenses, and t h a t said committee be given full power and authority to carry out t h e purpose of this resolution, reporting their action to this board. The president appointed for this committee Messrs. Armstrong, Morgan, and Morrison. Mr. Morgan offered t h e following resolution, which was adopted: Besolved, T h a t Dr. Burrill, Professor Morrow, Professor Talbot and Professor Palmer be placed in exclusive charge and authority over t h e mechanical exhibit of t h e University at t h e World's Columbian Exposition and put it a t once into a thoroughly presentable condition. Mr. Bullard reported from t h e executive committee t h a t t h e Union Manufacturing Company had tendered t h e board, through t h e business agent, a contract concerning the water supply for t h e University, as follows:

CONTRACT.

I t is hereby agreed by and between the Union Manufacturing Company, party of t h e first part, and t h e trustees of t h e University of Illinois, party of t h e second part, t h a t in consideration of t h e sum of $500 per year t h e said Union Manufacturing Company shall furnish t h e said University of Illinois with a sufficient supply of water, to be used for t h e same purpose for which it is now being used by said University, for t h e term of five years from t h e first day of January, 1893, t h e said party of the second part agreeing to pay party of t h e first part $125 a t the end of each three months during t h e existence of this contract, beginning the first day of April, 1893. I t is hereby understood and agreed t h a t should anything occur at water works' plant or to t h e mains to prevent party of t h e first part from furnishing the supply of water above mentioned, they will not be held liable for damages, and party of t h e second part will be released from paying for water for t h e time t h e supply is cut off.
