STATE LABORATORY OF N A T U R A L HISTORY.

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your committee appointed to ascertain the relations between the University and the State Laboratory of Natural History begs leave to report as follows: The Illinois State Natural History Society was organized at a convention held at Bloomington June 30, 858, and incorporated by act of t h e legislature, approved February 22, 1861. As appears from this act, its object was to collect specimens of animals, plants and minerals, and to establish a museum and library for the use of members, citizens and schools of Illinois, which museum was kept at the building of the State Normal University. By an act of the legislature, approved April 14, 1871, an appropriation was made for the improvement of the museum and for the salary of a curator, with a provision t h a t the money should not be paid "until t h e State Natural History Society shall have relinquished all its rights and title in and to said museum to the state of Il.inois in such manner as shall be satisfactory to the Governor." In accordance with this act the Illinois Natural History Society transferred, through its agent, Josep'i A. Sewall, all its property of every kind, then in the Normal University
