I t was ordered t h a t $350.00 be paid Professor Bicker on his c o n t r a c t as architect. The Committee on Instruction recommended t h e a p p o i n t m e n t of Mr. J o h n P . Gordy, of Athens, Ohio, t o the professorship of psychology, a t a salary of f 2,000 a year, and the a p p o i n t m e n t was made on motion of Mr. McLean, t h e salary t o begin with t h e next term, if Professor Gordy should enter upon service a t t h a t time; if not, t o begin with September 1, 1892. Professor Burrill and Mr. Shawhan, t o whom h a d been referred a t the l a s t meeting the a p p o i n t m e n t of a professor of mechanical engineering, reported, recommending for the place Mr. C. W. Scribner, of Ames, Iowa. The a p p o i n t m e n t was made, and t h e salary fixed a t $2,000 a year, the term of service t o begin September 1, 1892. The Board then t o o k a recess t o a t t e n d the exercises a t the laying of the corner stone of N a t u r a l H i s t o r y Hall. The address on this occasion wras made by President T. C. Chamberlain, of the University of Wisconsin. The corner stone was laid by Mr. B a a b , of this Board. The committee t o whom was referred the m a t t e r of devising measures of protection a g a i n s t loss and danger from fire, reported progress and asked for further time, which was granted. On motion of Mr. B a a b , the Business Agent was directed t o purchase 6 dozen h a n d fire grenades t o be distributed in the different buildings. On motion of Mr. Shawhan, the Business Agent was directed t o have the doors of the society rooms on the fourth floor of t h e main building h u n g t o open outwards. On motion of Mr. McKay, the subject of new buildings was referred t o t h e Committee on Buildings and Grounds, t h e Finance Committee, and t h e Executive Committee of t h e Faculty, with instructions t o prepare preliminary plans and estimates, t o be presented a t the J u n e meeting of t h e Board. The committee t o which w7as referred a t the last meeting t h e question of diplomas for accredited schools, etc., reported estimates as follows:

100 diplomas , 500 certificates 8,000 circulars* illustrated, and postage.

And this a m o u n t was a p p r o p r i a t e d for these purposes, t o be expended by the Business Agent and Regent.
