Estimate to be made by architect on first of each month, 80 per cent, of this estimate to be paid to contractors within fifteen days thereafter; balance to be retained until final settlement. Bond for $1,500 required in addition, which was furnished by contractors, with Gr. F. Beardsiey as surety. Guaranteed to heat on inside building 90° F. above temperature of air outside, or from -—20° to 70° F. I have further arranged to have a 4-inch tile drain laid in the trench below the box to remove surface water and leakage and conduct the water into the University sewer near by. The material for the job is now on cars in Champaign and will be delivered at the building early this week. If the committee prefers a brick chimney to the steel one specified, which will last five years, I will arrange to have this change made, if so instructed. After the signing of the contract, Messrs. Robinson & Burr, of Champaign, expressed dissatisfaction t h a t the contract was awarded to Maltby < Wallace under the changed conditions without giving them an oppor& tunity likewise to submit a new bid. As the conditions of the contract were substantially those required by the specifications submitted by Robinson & Burr, and the. contract was practically let about $170 below the corresponding bid of Robinson & Burr, their point does not appear to be well taken. All of which is respectfully submitted.

1ST. CLIFFORD RICKER.

We ask your approval of extra footing of wall and the door already authorized by the committee. We ask you to consider the matter of insuring the building during process of erection. We ask your approval of the employment of a superintendent of construction at a maximum expense of $100 per month. We ask you to appropriate the necessary amount to put in new front doors to the University Hall, say $300. The heating for Military Hall has been contracted for, and the work is under way. We recommend the erection of a brick chimney instead of the steel one, as the amount of the appropriation will justify us in doing so. Respectfully submitted,
