UNIVERSITY O F ILLINOIS.

ing the question of providing a steam engine for the physical laboratory was discussed and referred to Professor Stratton for report at this time. The proposals for this are herewith submitted. If this engine is procured and has sufficient capacity for the electric lights needed, as well as for the physical experiments, a decidedly desirable end might be attained with a Very small expenditure of money. I t is possible to use the current from the street car lines, and very favorable terms can be made with the company; but it seems impossible to secure in this way a light sufficiently steady for our purposes. I therefore respectfully suggest t h a t this matter be considered in connection with t h a t of a new engine and boiler. But as the latter has not yet been considered, no further recommendations are now made. A request from the Philomathean Society is, however, presented.

F U E L GAS.

In this connection it seems to me desirable t h a t there should be an investigation of the question of putting in an apparatus for the manufacture of fuel gas for the laboratories.

APPROPRIATIONS.

I herewith submit for your information a number of communications from the various departments of instruction. The following requests for money have been taken from these papers. The various items have been fully discussed and are all in the line of substantial and important improvements:
