The instruction and class exercises occupy a b o u t three hours each week, arranged, as far as possible, so as n o t t o interfere with a n y other course of study. Students m u s t be careful, however, t o ascertain, before entering t h e military class, t h a t t h e proper studies a n d exercises of their chosen course will n o t be interfered with. Commissions.—The Governor of the s t a t e is accustomed t o commission as captains, by brevet, in t h e s t a t e militia, such g r a d u a t e s of the University as have completed t h studies of the military classes and have obtained t h e requisite experience in command in t h e University b a t t a l i o n . In order t o obtain t h e commission fche student m u s t be approved by t h e F a c u l t y a n d pass, satisfactorily, an examination in military science and tactics before a committee appointed by the F a c u l t y of the University. I t is expected t h a t in order t o get the required experience in command, the members of t h e military class of the third or junior year will serve as commissioned officers of the several companies of the b a t t a l i o n . The standings obtained in military science are n o t counted in the number required for g r a d u a t i o n or class s t a n d i n g ; the commissions above named being deemed sufficient reward for proficiency in this department. University Uniform —Under the a u t h o r i t y of the acts of incorporation, the Trustees have prescribed t h a t all male students, after the first term of their attendance, shall wear t h e University uniform. The University cap is t o be worn from t h e first. The uniform consists of a suit and a cap of cadet g r a y cloth. Students can procure them ready made on their arrival here. The University cap is ornamented in front with the initials, U. of I., surrounded by a wreath. Students will always wear their uniforms on parade, b u t in their rooms and a t recit a t i o n m a y wear other clothing. The University library contains m a n y books on military science, military history and engineering;. Gymnasium.—The drill hall is furnished with a full set of gymnastic a p p a r a t u s , and classes in gymnastic exercises are organized in t h e fall and winter terms, under careful leaders. Fee, 50 cents. The University Cornet Band is composed of students who, while members of the band, are excused from drill. Instruments and music are furnished by the University, and the band plays a t drill and other college exercises.
