PREPARATORY CLASSES.

ORGANIZATION OF THE UNIVERSITY.

The institution is a university in the American sense, t h o u g h differing designedly in the character of some of its colleges from t h e older institutions of this country. I t embraces four colleges, which are subdivided i n t o schools. A school is understood t o embrace the course of instruction needful for some one profession or vocation. Schools t h a t are cognate in character and studies, are grouped in t h e same college. The following are the colleges and schools:

I. II. COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING.

School of Mechanical Engineering. School of Civil Engineering. School of Mining Engineering. School of Architecture.

III. COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCE.

School of Chemistry.

IV.

School of Natural History.

COLLEGE OF LITERATURE AND SCIENCE.

School of English and Modern Languages. School of Ancient Languages.

V. ADDITIONAL SCHOOLS.

School of Military Science.

School of Art and Design, as

Vocal and instrumental music are also t a u g h t , b u t n o t p a r t s of any regular course.

PREPARATORY CLASSES.

T o meet a n urgent demand, t h e Trustees have temporarily provided for teaching t h e p r e p a r a t o r y studies lying between t h e work of some of t h e common schools and t h a t of t h e University.
