T h e r e will b e , before t h e n e x t m e e t i n g of t h e B o a r d , a c h a r g e of fifty dollars ($50.00) s a l a r y of F o r e m a n , a n d t h e c o s t of coal for t h e g r e e n h o u s e , s o m e sixty (60) or m o r e dollars. T h e i n c o m e d u r i n g t h e s a m e p e r i o d will be v e r y little if a n y . Burrill: I h e r e w i t h p r e s e n t a s t a t e m e n t s h o w i n g t h e e x p e n s e a n d i n c o m e of t h e s e v e r a l b r a n c h e s of t h e H o r t i c u l t u r a l w o r k : T h e s t r a w b e r r i e s in t h e s p r i n g m a d e a fine s h o w i n g for a l a r g e crop, w h i c h w a s c u t off a t l e a s t one-half b y t h e frost. W h a t w a s left w a s of p o o r quality. T h e r a s p b e r r i e s w e r e a fair crop, b u t only a b o u t one-half of t h e l a s t y e a r ' s crop, which w a s e x t r a . T h e b l a c k b e r r i e s w e r e good. T h e r e w a s e n o u g h of all for t h e m a r k e t . Of t h e n u r s e r y stock, all t h e fruit t r e e s offered w e r e d i s p o s e d of. T h e forest and-everg r e e n t r e e s w e n t off slowly. We a r e n o w r e a d y to c o m m e n c e t h e t h i n n i n g of t h e forest t r e e s , a s h a s b e e n d i r e c t e d . I w o u l d s u g g e s t t h e p r o p r i e t y of l e a v i n g a block of t w o or t h r e e or m o r e v a r i e t i e s w i t h o u t t h i n n i n g , a s a n e x p e r i m e n t , a s I a m n o t t h o r o u g h l y satisfied t h a t t h e t r e e s h a v e a t t a i n e d a sufficient h i g h t for t h i s o p e r a t i o n , or w h e t h e r it w o u l d n o t b e b e s t to let t h e m t h i n t h e m selves, a s n a t u r e , s o m e t i m e s a t least, s e l e c t s b e t t e r t h a n m a n .
