L a w r e n c e b u t o w i n g t o t h e d e l a y i n r e c e i v i n g t h e e n g i n e and boiler from t h e m a c h i n e s h o p s only a p a r t of w h a t w a s a g r e e d u p o n h a s b e e n done, a n d t h e r e p o r t t h e r e o n m u s t b e m a d e l a t e r . EXPERIMENTS FOR 1872. T h e g r o u n d p r e p a r e d in p a r t for t h e s e h a s b e e n a s s i g n e d t o t h e h o r t i c u l t u r a l d e p a r t m e n t , b u t o t h e r g r o u n d can no d o u b t b e got r e a d y i n t i m e . T h e s e e x p e r i m e n t s i n c l u d e t h r e e or four t h a t w e a r e e n d e a v o r i n g to h a v e t r i e d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y a t all t h e a g r i c u l t u r a l colleges so t h a t o u r e x p e r i m e n t a l w o r k m a y r e q u i r e less r e p e t i t i o n a n d p r o c e e e d m o r e r a p i d l y b y b e i n g in m a n y h a n d s a t once. B e s i d e s t h i s , I h a v e r e c e i v e d from s e v e r a l p o i n t s s i t u a t e d i n t h e different soils a n d i n t h e different clim a t e s of t h e s t a t e s , a s s u r a n c e s t h a t w i t h a l i t t l e e x p e n s e on t h e p a r t of t h e u n i v e r s i t y t h e s e common exp e r i m e n t s m a y b e c a r r i e d on s i m u l t a n e o u s l y a t s e v e n different p o i n t s i n o u r o w n s ate, s u ch as B e l v i dere, LaMoille, M a c o m b , C h a m p a i g n , Moro, M o u n t V e r n o n a n d Villa R i d g e , w h e r e , p e r h a p s , b y p a y i n g t h e additional cost a b o v e g r o w i n g 3 or 4 a c r e s of corn i n t h e o r d i n a r y w a y , w e m a y h a v e e x p e r i m e n t s c o n d u c t e d u n d e r t h e g e n e r a l s u p e r v i s i o n of t h e t r u s t e e s r e s p e c t i v e l y r e s i d i n g n e a r t h o s e p o i n t s .
