Phyllis Crawford won the $3,000 prize awarded annually by the [ worth Ford Foundation in a contest for children s books with "rfj Ellswo K ; a book published this fall by H e n r y H o l t & Co. Her book is the story of storeboat life on t h e . O h i o river in 1817, deaL with a family which traveled tip and down the river selling dry goods ar groceries to the settlers. It is based on research in diaries, pilots' manual? nnd biographies of the early Nineteenth Century. Miss Crawford was born in Little Rock, and attended Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Va. After teaching English for a year at Fairfax Hall Va she studied Library Science at the University of Illinois. In 1 2 94 she went to New York as an editorial assistant for the H. W. Wii , Company, library publishers, later becoming an editor. It was while working for the Federal Art Project in charge of research that she came acre some manuscripts dealing with boat life on the Ohio river and became interested in the subject. Lora Crouch, librarian of the Carnegie Library at Mitchell, S.D., gave a talk to the Public Library Round Table of the South Dakota Libra Association meeting at Sioux Falls on October 14, 1938 on the subject, "Service to Rural Borrowers from the Standpoint of the City Library." She was also chairman of the Federal Relation Committee of the S.D.L.A. At the A.L.A. meeting at Kansas City last J u n e she was chairman of the Adult Education Round Table for Small Libraries and led the discussion on "An Adult Education Program for the Small Library." Lucy Wilson Errett, trustee of the Kewanee Public Library, spoke on "Cooperation in Henry County" before the Trustee's section of the Illinois Library Association. Lois Farr, librarian of the Pontiac Public Library, spoke on "Book Reviews Most Helpful to Librarians" before the general session of the Illinois Library Association in October. Kate D. Ferguson, librarian of the Bank of Italy, San Francisco, has been president of the local chapter of the Special Libraries Association this year. She is also publicity chairman for the A.L.A. Committee at San .brancisco. Marjorie Glass, cataloger, South Dakota State College, spoke on a Recent Reference Books" before the general session of the South Dakota Library Association.
