In the United States a natuni.il convention of the Socialist (0 Louis, April 7. 1917, proclaimed p%irl> of Aim m a b« Id at St thrir "unalterable Opposlt am to the war", railed upon the ••workers Of all count i-H»S to ivfuse to support their governments in their wars." declared tho declaration of war against Germany to bo "a crime against tho people of the United States and g a i n s t th»* nations of tho world," assorted that there had boon "in all modern history no more unjustifiable war than this" and that no "greater dishonor had ever been forced upon a people." It urged upon all Socialists "continuous, active and public opposition to the war" and "unyielding opposition to all 1 proposed legislation for conscription* (Amer. Year Book, 1917, p. 395). Some of the more moderate Socialists protested against these resolutions and subsequently withdrew from the party. Queries: Why have the Socialist and Labor parties in the United States played an insignificant role as compared with those parties in Germany, France and England? (Only one Socialist member of Congress at present; few in the state legislatures). What is the explanation of the rapid growth of those parties in Europe? To what extent are the Democratic Democratic and Republican parties in the United States? F.
