On motion of Mr. Johnston, the minutes of the meetings of April 24 and May 26 were approved as printed on pages 1443 to 1504, inclusive, and approval of the minutes of June 19, 1952, was authorized, as recommended. The Board resumed consideration of the following business presented by the President of the University.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY (2) T h e following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant P r o fessor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. JACK W . GRIST, Assistant Professor of Art, beginning September 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $4,500 ( D ) . 2. RANDALL JARRELL, Visiting Associate Professor of English, for the second semester, 1952-1953, at a salary of $4,000. 3. WALTER JAMES MOORE, Director of the Nursery School in the Division of Special Services for W a r Veterans (DY67), and Principal, Elementary Laboratory School, and Assistant Professor, College of Education ( D Y 3 3 ) , beginning September I, 1952, at an annual salary of $7,500. 4. LORETTA T. ZDERAD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatric Nursing, School of Nursing, beginning July 15, 1952, at an annual salary of $4,794 ( D Y ) , plus meals.

5. R A L P H WALDO GERARD, Professor of Neurophysiology, in the Department

of Psychiatry, and Professor of Physiology, beginning September 1, 1952, at an annual salary of $15,000 ( A Y ) . The Director of Nonacademic Personnel reports the following appointments to supervisory positions of upper level responsibility. 6. J. CURTIS GABBARD, Project Engineer in the Physical Plant Department, beginning April 28, 1952, at a salary of $6,000 per year. 7. BEVERLY J. W H I T E , Electroencephalographer in the Research and Educational Hospitals, beginning May 19, 1952, at a salary of $3,500 per year.

On motion of Mr. Grange, these appointments were confirmed.

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICES (3) I recommend the appointment of Dr. Lester M. Dyke, Sheldon, Iowa, as Director of Health Services of the University of Illinois with the rank of P r o fessor at an annual salary of $14,000 on a Y basis, and that the President of the University be authorized to determine the effective date of this appointment which will be not later than January 1, 1953.1

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT O F THEORETICAL A N D APPLIED MECHANICS (4) Professor Fred B. Seely, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, will retire from active service September 1, 1952. I recommend the appointment of Professor W. C. Huntington, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, to serve also as Acting Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, beginning September 1, 1952, until a permanent head has been appointed.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this appointment was approved.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR WILLIAM H. McPHERSON (5) Dr. William H . McPherson, Professor of Economics, Department of Economics and Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, has been granted a sabbatical leave of absence for the academic year 1952-1953 on one-half pay. H e now requests that this be changed to leave of absence for one-half year on full pay and also that he be granted leave of absence without pay for the other half of the
