MARIA LEONARD 1880-1976 Dr. Leonard was Dean of Women from 1923 to 1945—a formative period when increasing numbers of women entered college studies. She was an early advocate seeking to expand career opportunities for women and helping to direct their aspirations beyond traditional bounds. Dean Leonard founded Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman scholarship honorary. She fostered and supported organizations which assisted youth to realize their potentials, to undertake challenges, and to succeed in innovative and productive areas of society. Women regarded her as a concerned, gracious, and caring counselor. M I R I A M A. SHELDEN 1912-1975 Dean of Women from 1947 and Dean of Student Personnel from 1973 to 1975, Dr. Shelden was influential in developing equal opportunity programs for women, minorities, and the disadvantaged. Her extensive and tireless participation in campus, state, and national organizations helped expand and improve educational options and opportunities for students. Dean Shelden's professional accomplishments, administrative abilities, and perceptive attention to educational concerns helped establish her reputation as a respected advocate for students and staff in higher education, especially those who encountered difficult circumstances. She was a diligent, resolute, and persuasive champion for students.
