1. Casting of single metal phosphides and preparation of polymetal phosphides — Shun Sheng Hsu, Research Associate in Chemical Engineering, Sherlock Swann, Jr., Research Professor of Chemical Engineering, and J. C. Bailar, Jr., Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, inventors. This invention, developed in connection with research under a contract with the United States Navy, is concerned with the process of casting single metal phosphides and with the process of preparing phosphides of two or more metals in a homogeneous single phase. It is the opinion of the division of chemical research of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the inventors that, although the invention has some commercial possibilities, the commercial value would not warrant the expenditure of University funds for developing and securing a patent. The Patent Committee concurs and recommends that the University's rights to the invention be released to the Office of Naval Research. 2. Millimicrosecond pulsed light — John H . Malmberg, Research Assistant in Physics, inventor. This is a device which produces light pulses of a very short duration, at a time determined by an externally applied trigger. It is for use in research in nuclear physics. The Department of Physics reports that the use of this development is limited to research laboratories which have extreme requirements for the performance of scintillation counters. In the opinion of the Department the commercial possibilities are so limited that the University would not be justified in expending funds for a patent application. T h e Patent Committee concurs and recommends that the invention be released to the inventor for publication or for a patent application in his own name. 3. Combustion system for regenerative gas turbine — John C. Miles, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Norman A. Parker, Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, inventors. This invention concerns a method of burning oil or gasoline in a gas turbine operating on the regenerative cycle, by employing a combustion method whereby the fuel is supplied to the combustor at a point in the air stream ahead of the regenerative matrix. This invention was disclosed to the University Patent Committee on August 12, 1955, and that Committee immediately referred it to the University of Illinois Foundation for investigation and report. On September 15 the Foundation reported that there was a great deal of interest in this invention by the motor car industry. In order to protect the interests of the University and the inventors, the Foundation's patent attorney urged that an immediate application for a patent be filed. Accordingly, the Patent Committee authorized the University of Illinois Foundation to make immediate application for a patent. The Committee recommends that the rights and interests of the University in this invention be transferred to the University of Illinois Foundation for patent application and development. I concur in these recommendations.

On motion of Mr. Bissell, these recommendations were approved.

VACATION OF PORTION OF ILLINOIS STREET IN URBANA, ILLINOIS (33) The Ordinance of the city of Urbana, Illinois, for the vacation of Illinois Street between Mathews and Goodwin Avenues provides that the vacation shall become effective when owners of all the property abutting upon that portion of the street shall have paid compensation aggregating $51,613, plus interest, to the city for the benefits which will accrue to them by reason of the vacation and when the University files with the City Clerk a written undertaking, under its seal, "to forever indemnify the city of Urbana, Illinois, and hold it harmless against any and all claims which may be asserted against it by any of the public utility companies now maintaining public service facilities in said portion of said street on account of this vacation thereof and also against any and all claims for damages which may be asserted by any and all other persons, firms, and corporations against the city of Urbana on account, or as a result, of this vacation of said portion of said street." When this Ordinance was adopted the University owned a substantial portion of the property abutting upon that block of Illinois Street on each side thereof. Through acquisition of title to the properties abutting upon that portion of the street then owned by the Wesley Foundation and Mrs. Anna Marie Swinford, the University is now the owner of all of the property abutting upon that block of Illinois Street on each side thereof, although it is possible, but not
