1943] UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS 727 REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY (2) Under the regulations now in effect, the College of Pharmacy accepts only high-school graduates who are in the upper fifty per cent of their graduating class. At the National Convention of the American Association of Colleges and Boards of Pharmacy, held early last September, the Association recommended that its member institutions accept high school students from the upper threefifths of their class. This action accords with the recommendation of the W a r Manpower Commission, which has adopted a policy of allowing twenty-four months deferment from military service for qualified students in Pharmacy, and has proposed the selection of the upper three-fifths of the high-school class as a basis for assuring proper quality of students. For our own College of Pharmacy, this means lowering the entrance requirement by ten per cent; for most other colleges of pharmacy, it means raising their entrance requirements by forty per cent. At any rate, the proposed action would be uniform for all the colleges of the Association. T h e College of Pharmacy requests permission to bring its entrance requirement into accord with the Association, and the University Senate recommends approval. I concur in this recommendation. On motion of Mr. Karraker, this recommendation was adopted. CERAMIC ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP TRUST F U N D (3) T h e Department of Ceramic Engineering and the Dean of the College of Engineering recommend that there be established a "Ceramic Scholarship Trust Fund." T h e objectives of this fund will be to encourage worthy high-school graduates to attend the University of Illinois and to major in Ceramic Engineering, thus helping to meet the great demand for ceramic engineers in industry. The Department recommends sources of funds and the awards of scholarships as follows: A. Source of Funds 1. Grants from industry. 2. Grants from organizations. 3. Grants included in funds assigned to the University for cooperative research projects in the Department of Ceramic Engineering. S. Administration of Funds 1. Funds to be accepted and disbursed by the University for the payment of matriculation and tuition fees of the scholarship holder. 2. Not over fifty dollars a year to be disbursed for advertising and supervision of the scholarships. C. Appointment to Scholarships 1. Appointments will be made on the basis of merit by the University Committee on Special Undergraduate Scholarships, on nomination by the Department of Ceramic Engineering. 2. Appointments will be made only when funds sufficient for a two-year term are available at the time of appointment. 3. Appointments will be made only in advance of applicant's first enrollment at the University of Illinois. 4. Appointments will be made for one year and will be extended for an additional year to appointees who have made a satisfactory record in their first year of University work. Extensions will be made by the Committee on Special Undergraduate Scholarships on recommendation of the Department of Ceramic Engineering on the basis of the student's record in the University. I recommend approval. On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, this fund was established as recommended. APPOINTMENT OF DR. HAROLD C. WIGGERS (4) A report of the appointment of Dr. Harold C. Wiggers of Western Reserve University Medical School as Associate Professor of Physiology in the College of Medicine, beginning October 15, 1943, at an annual salary of $4,000. On motion of Mr. Fornof, this appointment was made as recommended.
