BOARD OF TRUSTEES

VOLUNTARY CLASSES IN EQUITATION

[February 24

(17) A report that the Military Department has been authorized to conduct voluntary classes in equitation for a limited number of women students and children of officers of the Military Department under the following conditions: (a) Classes will be open to sophomore and junior women students in good scholastic standing whose applications have been approved by the Dean of Women and faculty advisers. (b) One small class for children of officers of the Military Department, which will be held after the other classes. After trial this may be extended to include other members of the faculty and their children in limited numbers. (c) Fees.—A fee of $3.00 per student for a course of ten lessons and of 10 cents per lesson for children will be charged for each individual enrolled. The fees will be payable to the Bursar of the University on registration in the classes, and a special fund will be set up from which the expenses of conducting the classes will be paid. I request confirmation of my action.

On motion of Mr. Williams, this action was confirmed.

SEWAGE TREATMENT RESEARCH

(18) The Illinois Association of Sanitary Districts, through its executive committee, the Illinois Society of Engineers, and the Sewage Treatment Plant Operators of Illinois have adopted resolutions recommending the continuance of sewage treatment research by the Engineering Experiment Station, which was discontinued because of lack of sufficient funds. These resolutions are submitted herewith. The resumption of this work will involve an expenditure of $3,500.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, the continuance of this work was authorized, and an appropriation of $3,500 for the purpose was made from the Reserve and Contingent Fund, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Barrett, Mrs. Freeman, Mr. Karraker, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Trees, Mr. Williams; no, none; absent, Mr. Barr, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. Horner.

MESSAGE FROM THE CZECHOSLOVAK NATIONAL COUNCIL CONCERNING CHAIR OF SLAVONIC LANGUAGES

(19) The Czechoslovak National Council of America requests the University of Illinois to establish a chair of Slavonic languages and literatures. A memorandum from the Council concerning this proposal is submitted herewith.

This matter was referred to the President of the University for consideration and report.

K. C. BABCOCK E N D O W M E N T SECURITIES

(20) A report from the Comptroller that in accordance with the action of the Board of Trustees at the last meeting, $5,000 par of Berlin City Electric Company 6^2% bonds, due 1950, received as a part of the K. C. Babcock endowment, have been disposed of at a price of 60, realizing $3,000 and thus resulting in a reduction of $2,000 in the book value of this endowment. In their place, $5,000 par of German International SlA% bonds, due 1965, were purchased at a price of 62, the difference being temporarily advanced out of income until further changes in the investments of this fund are made through which the difference can be taken up in the principal account.

GIFTS TO T H E UNIVERSITY

(21) The following report of gifts received by the University since the last report: Western Electric Company, electrical condensers, coils, switches, and miscellaneous electrical equipment, totaling at least $500, to the Department of Electrical Engineering.
