HARRY J . D1FFENBAUGH F U N D FOR DESERVING STUDENTS (22) A report that the H a r r y J. Diffenbaugh Fund for Deserving Students is now available and that Dean Fred H . T u r n e r has been appointed agent of the University of Illinois in dealing with this matter, and applications and recommendations for the fund will be transmitted to the trustees through him.

On motion of Mr. Trees, this appointment was approved.

GIFTS TO THE UNIVERSITY (23) The following report of gifts received by the University since the last report: 1. Continental Oil Company of Ponca City, Oklahoma, $750, for a research assistantship in chemistry for 1933-342. Bauer and Black Division of the Kendall Company, Chicago, $300, for a research assistantship in chemistry for the first semester of 1933-34. This is a renewal of a research assistantship which the Company has maintained in the past. 3. Portland Cement Association, Chicago, $1,000, to cover the expenses of preparing plans for a cooperative investigation of reinforced concrete frames. The contract for the investigation itself is reported separately. 4. Brookings Institution of Washington, D.C., $770, to be paid quarterly for a fellowship, and a further allowance not to exceed $250 a year to cover the necessary travel and incidental expenses of the appointee for a study of the organization and operation of the Federal Agricultural Adjustment Act during the time the Act is in operation. 5. Eli Lilly and Company, $1100, for work in physiological chemistry under the direction of Dr. W . H . Welker of the College of Medicine. 6. E. I. DuPont De Nemours and Company, approximately $1500—$300 representing the first payment already being received—for research on the physiological effects of cuprous cyanide by the Department of Chemistry under the direction of Professor W . C. Rose. 7. Utilities Research Commission, $178.74, supplementing previous grants for the investigation of methods of testing high voltage cables. 8. American Society for Testing Materials, $200, supplementing previous grants made for the investigation of cast iron pipe.

REPORT OF PURCHASES (24) T h e following report of purchases authorized by the President since the last report: 1. Public liability, property damage, and workmen's compensation insurance from the United States Fidelity and Guarantee Company and from the Industrial Commission of Ohio at a total cost of $1,746.36 to protect the University in the special rails tests project carried out on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company's tracks in Ohio during the summer. T h e cost of this insurance was paid out of the trust funds for the rails investigations. 2. F r o m the Cherry-Burrell Corporation, of Chicago, a 250-gallon viscolizer for the Department of Dairy Husbandry at a total cost of $1,302, which represents a reduction of $378 from the regular cost of such equipment. 3. From the York Company, of Chicago, a refrigerating unit for the York machine in the Women's Residence Hall at a total cost of $1,787. T h e cost of this was paid from the Residence Hall Fund. 4. Coal, in accordance with contracts submitted to the Board in July and supplementary contracts made with the advice and by direction of the President of the Board, as follows:
