R E T I R E M E N T O F P R O F E S S O R J A M E S B. S H A W (11) A request from Professor James B. Shaw, of the Department of Mathematics, that he be retired under the rules of the Board on September 1, 1933. He will be 67 years old on March 20, 1933, a n d will have been in the service of the University 23 years on September 1. The rules of t h e Board permit retirement at any time after a member of the staff reaches 65 years of age (provided he has been in University service for at least 15 years) in exceptional cases and for substantial cause. His retiring allowance will be $2,280, and the Department has agreed to provide for his work without an increase in its budget, a t least until the time he would normally retire in 1934I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Trees, this request was granted.

INVESTIGATION OF REINFORCED BRICK MASONRY (12) A report of the authorization of an agreement with the Reinforced Concrete Masonry Research Board for a cooperative investigation of reinforced brick masonry. This agreement is for one year, beginning February 1, 1933, with provision for its extension, and t h e Research Board agrees to pay the University the sum of $500 in one sum upon the execution of this agreement and to provide materials and additional funds, as needed, to the amount of J200 for the expenses of the investigation.

REPORT OF PURCHASES (14) The following report of purchases authorized by the President since the last report: A. Daigger and Company, Chicago, Pyrex Laboratory Glassware, approximately 12,300 for second semester laboratory requirements. This is a non-competitive item sold at established list prices subject to trade discounts on orders for 100 or more cases.

GIFTS TO T H E UNIVERSITY (15) The following report of gifts received by the University since the last report was made: Volumes and journals to the College of Medicine from Dr. D. Kobak, Editor of the Archives of Physical Therapy, X-Ray, and Radium; Mrs. A. Besta, mother of the late Dr. C. J . Besta, an alumnus of the College of Medicine; and the Doctors Swltzer, of Ludington, Michigan. From the Council of Physical Therapy of the American Medical Association, $200 for research work in Ultra Violet and X-Ray in the College of Medicine. From the Electrical Engineering Society (Student) through its Trustee, Professor E. B . Paine, $332.40 t o be added to the Electrical Engineering Loan Fund established by the Society and accepted by the Board of Trustees, October 13, 1928.
