SELECTION OF

On motion of Mr. Trees, consideration of the steps to be taken with reference to selecting a successor to President Chase was deferred until the next meeting of the Board.

ACCIDENT COMPENSATION

On motion of Mr. Armstrong, the action of the Board on January 25. 1933, adopting section 2 of the report of the special committee on accident compensation (page 166), was reconsidered. President Chase made a statement. On motion of Mr. Armstrong, section 2 was amended to read as follows and was adopted in its amended form, effective as of January 25- 1933:

2. In as much as it appears doubtful whether the Board has the legal power to pay compensation in any form to employees who may be injured in its employ, that no compensation be paid to any such employee as may be hereafter injured while employed by the University, and that such employees make their claims in accordance with the law. SPECIAL C O M M I T T E E ON J O U R N A L I S M BUILDING

Mr. Armstrong, for the special committee to confer with the committee of the Illinois Press Association on the matter of providing a building for the School of Journalism, reported that the action of the Illinois Press Association, withdrawing for the present its request for a building, made the continuance of the committee unnecessaryOn motion of Mr. Barr, this report was accepted and the committee was discharged.

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT CHASE

The Board considered the following matters presented by the President of the University.

J A M E S M. W H I T E D E A T H B E N E F I T (1) A report of the death on February 6, 1933, of Professor James M. White, Supervising Architect, and a recommendation that an appropriation of $3,000 be made from the Reserve and Contingent Fund for the death benefit payable under the rules of the Board and the terms of his contract and that the Comptroller be authorized to make payment to the designated beneficiary.

On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, this recommendation was adopted, and the appropriation was made by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Barr, Mr. Barrett, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Grigsby, Dr. Noble, Mr. Trees, Mr. Williams; no, none; absent, Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. Horner.

RESOLUTION ON T H E DEATH OF PROFESSOR WHITE

On motion of Mr. Blair, the following resolution was adopted:

The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois records with its deepest sorrow and sense of loss the death on February 6, 1933, of James McLaren White. Professor of Architectural Engineering, Supervising Architect, and Superintendent of Business Operations. Professor White was one of the distinguished alumni of the University of Illinois and had given almost 43 years of devoted and outstanding service to his Alma Mater, first as a member of the faculty of the Department of Architecture, later as Dean of the College of Engineering, and for over 25 years as Supervising Architect; for the last 12 years he served also as Superintendent of Business Operations. Under his careful and far-sighted planning has been developed a physical plant adequate for the
