268 FELLOWSHIPS candidate must have it printed and must deposit not less than one hundred copies with the librarian of the University. FELLOWSHIPS The Trustees of the University have established eight fellowships, each with a stipend of three hundred dollars, payable in ten monthly installments. The rules governing appointments to these fellowships are as follows: 1. The purpose of these fellowships shall be to promote advanced scholarship and original research in the University. 2. The fellowships shall be open to graduates of this and similar institutions. Those who are to complete an under-graduate course previous to the academic year for which appointments are made shall be eligible, with others, as candidates. 3. Nominations to fellowships, accompanied by assignments to special departments of the University for instructional work, shall be made by the Council of Administration to the Trustees of the University, upon applications received by the President of the University each year, not later than the twenty-fifth day of April. These nominations shall be made at a meeting of the Council called for that purpose within the month of May. The appointments by the Trustees are made at their regular meeting in June, and shall take effect the first day of the following September. Vacancies may be filled by similar nominations and appointments at other times. 4. Nominations to fellowships shall be made upon the grounds of worthiness of character, scholastic attainments, and promise of success in the principal line of study or research to which the candidate proposes to devote himself. Consideration shall also be given to the probable value or usefulness of the services of the candidate as an assistant in instruction, but this shall not be deemed the primary object of the appointment.
