ANDREW VERNER, assistant professor of history, to complete a book-length manuscript on peasant ideology during the First Russian Revolution of 1905-07. DAVID C. WILKINS, assistant professor of computer science, to complete revisions to two major books in the area of automated knowledge acquisition. Eric Jacobsen and Pravin Vaidya have been recommended for appointment as Beckman Fellows in the Center for Advanced Study named for the donor of a gift which permits additional recognition for outstanding younger fellow candidates who have already made distinctive scholarly contributions in the sciences. T h e vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval.

O n motion of Mr. Grabowski, these appointments were approved. Undergraduate Instructional Awards for the Summer of 1991, Urbana

(8) T h e Undergraduate Instructional Awards Program at the Urbana-Champaign campus seeks to encourage faculty in the improvement of the quality of undergraduate instruction through provision of grants to support major course development projects. T h e awards typically provide summer salary for one month for faculty members on nine-month appointments, and sometimes provide incidental expenses a n d / o r graduate assistant support depending on the nature of the project. Proposals for the awards are evaluated and ranked at the departmental, school, and college levels before being judged by a campus-wide committee. T h e committee selects those proposals believed to promise the greatest potential benefit to undergraduate students.
