1911] PROCEEDINGS OF THE BOAED OF TRUSTEES. 153 Adjourned Session of June 22, 1911. Pursuant to the adjournment taken at the session of J u n e 14, 1911, the Boa*d of Trustees of the University of Illinois convened at the Blackstone hotel, in the city of Chicago, at 12:00 m., on Thursday, J u n e 22, 1911. The following members were present: President Abbott, Mrs. Bahrenburg, Mrs. Busey, Mrs. Evans, Mr. Grout, Mr. Hatch, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Meeker, Mr. Moore. President James was present. CERAMIC FURNACE AND K I L N LABORATORY—PLANS AND LOCATION. President James presented the following communications relating to the plans and location of the ceramic furnace and kiln laboratory, for which the Forty-seventh General Assembly made an appropriation of twenty-one thousand dollars: 1.. A communication from "Mr. A. V. Bleininger, professor of Ceramics, making the following suggestions: Location—That the proposed kiln house be so located that its southwest corner shall be 58 feet 6 inches from the northwest corner of the Physics building and its west end 38 feet 3 inches from the east side of the pumping station. According to the plans submitted, this would make the distance between the north side of the proposed kiln house and the Ceramics building 44 feet 3 inches, it being parallel to the latter but not exactly parallel with the Physics building. The distance between the physics shop and the proposed kiln house would be 21 feet 6 inches. General Construction—That the building be built of well burnt building bricks and be fire proof throughout. That the east end of the building have two stories, comprising the 31 foot offset. That the west end have walls sufficiently heavy to carry a second story to be built up later if necessary. That the kiln room proper consist of one story. That the floor be on a level with that of the laboratories of the Ceramics building. That the floors in the storage room (west end) and in the locker room, laboratory, and hall be of cement; that the kiln room have a temporary cinder floor. That the mean height of the kiln room be 20 feet. That there be no ceiling. That the roof consist. of steel roof trusses, coated with corrosion proof paint, and either slate or interlocking, roofing tiles. It is possible that especially low quotations may be obtained for roofing tiles. That the kiln room be provided with three 24-inch galvanized iron ventilators. Stack—That the stack be built according to the Custodis system of radial hollow bricks, and that its height be 60 feet. That it be provided with two flues, 15x30 inches each, up to the height of the roof. That these flues merge into one above this point. That horizontal flues leading to the stack be constructed as shown on the blue print. Storage Bins—That the bins be either sheet iron construction, or reinforced concrete 4 inches thick, or 4-inch .brick walls laid in cement. That the doors of the bins be sheet iron. That the outside bins next to the west wall be provided with outside doors about 18x18 inches near the top. That the bins be iy2 feet high inside. Recording Instrument Room—That this room have window walls and a cement floor. Benches—That the benches be provided with cupboards beneath. That the bench tops be reinforced concrete having a 1 inch top coat of 1:3 mixture rubbed smooth. That the doors of the cupboards be sheet iron. 2. A statement from Dr. W. F. M. Goss, dean of the College o'f Engineering, enclosing a communication from Dr. A. P. Carman, professor of Physics, in regard to the proposed location of the ceramics furnace and kiln house:
