CHICAGO, Illinois, April 22, 1897, To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN:—I beg leave to report that as directed by the Board, I went with Mr. Moore, Attorney, and Mr. Keith, Treasurer and called upon Charles W. Spalding, late Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, on April 14th. That Mr. Keith made specific demand for all moneys, notes, bonds, stocks, books of record, and other property belonging to the University of Illinois. That Mr. Spalding said in answer that he could not comply with the demand. And that he did not comply with said demand, and that directly he said again he could not comply with such demand.
