54 should be c h a r g e d to account of improved ventilation, a very i m p o r t a n t item in t h i s place, a n d about $50 to expense of concreting the g r o u n d u n d e r the floor, found to be n e c e s s a r y w h e n the floor w a s t a k e n u p . To pro vide for the deficiency in t h i s work, a n d to complete it, a n a p p r o p r i a t i o n of $250 is n e e d e d in addition to t h a t m a d e before. T h e r e is also needed a farther appropriation for tables, desks, sinks a n d o t h e r furniture, t o fit t h i s d e p a r t m e n t for service; $400 is a s k e d for t h i s purpose. T h e c h a n g e s and r e p a i r s in the janitor's a p a r t m e n t s are completed. T h e s e also h a v e e x c e e d e d the estimates. They have cost $360.99; the a p p r o p r i a t i o n s m a d e were $280, a n d t h e deficiency n e e d s to be provided for. N o t h i n g of i m p o r t a n c e h a s been done t o w a r d s building t h e Halfway H o u s e . T h e work a t t h e University h a s h a d the preference, because it h a d to be finished before t h e close of t h e vacation. The Halfway H o u s e will n e x t receive attention, and will be pushed to a s p e e d y conclusion. I have u r g e d the architect to revise his plans, with a view to lessening the exp e n s e in a way which shall not detract from the utility or b e a u t y of t h e s t r u c t u r e . The library floor h a s b e e n relaid at a cost of $145.77. Appropriation for s a m e , $150. U p o n the i m p r o v e m e n t s in t h e c a r p e n t e r s h o p $117.88 h a s b e e n e x p e n d e d . T h e work is not quite complete, but t h e appropriation, $150, is sufficient. The p u r c h a s e s of tools and m a c h i n e r y for the s h o p s a r e still u n d e r advisement. The m a c h i n e s wil[ be in place a s soon as needed. Much care h a s been exercised in t h e i r selection. The c h a n g e s in the engravings for diploma, certificate and seal, r e q u i r e d by t h e c h a n g e of n a m e of the University, are nearly completed. They will cost $164, instead of t h e s u m e s t i m a t e d heretofore. I p r e s e n t the report of t h e P r o f e s s o r of Agriculture. His r e q u e s t for $120 for r e p a i r s on his dwelling should be g r a n t e d . Professor F o r b e s a s k s the following i t e m s : F o r p u r c h a s e of material for dissection in the Zoological L a b o r a t o r y . $50.
