31 Authority was granted to the Begent and Faculty to publish the annual catalogue, in 4,000 copies, at an expense not to exceed $350. W. H. Garman was appointed assistant in Zoology for the remainder of the academic year (without salary). Trustee McLean offered the following resolution, which was adopted:

Resolved, T h a t t h e T r e a s u r e r of this University be a n d he is h e r e b y r e q u e s t e d to haveplaced u p o n the r e c o r d s of Gage County, Nebraska, t h e fifty-nine p a t e n t s i s s u e d by t h e United States to t h e Illinois I n d u s t r i a l University to t r a c t s of land in said c o u n t y ; t h a t t h e T r e a s u r e r be a u t h o r i z e d to p a y t h e fees for s a m e from t h e funds of t h i s University, a n d t h a t h e report his action at the next m e e t i n g of t h e B o a r d .

SECOND DAY'S SESSION. The Boprd convened at 8 o'clock A. M. Present: Trustees Cobb, McLean, Millard, Paden, and Pearman. The Committee on system of Bookkeeping submitted the following report:

R E P O R T OF COMMITTEE ON ACCOUNTS. To the Trustees of the Illinois Industrial University: G E N T L E M E N : Your committee to w h o m h a s b e e n referred t h e revision of the s y s t e m of accounts u s e d in t h e b u s i n e s s of t h e University, h a s carefully considered t h e subject r e ferred to it, and r e p o r t s and r e c o m m e n d s as follows: 1. T h e accounts h a v e b e e n kept from t h e b e g i n n i n g of the University in a n a c c u r a t e and methodical m a n n e r , and with g r e a t fidelity. S u c h c h a n g e s as m a y be r e c o m m e n d e d will be r a t h e r in detail t h a n in principle, and are not to b e c o n s t r u e d as reflecting u p o n form e r m e t h o d s or accounts. I t h a s been t h o u g h t b e t t e r to r e s t a t e a s y s t e m t h a n to describe a m e n d m e n t s to one w h i c h already exists. 2. All a c c o u n t s should be closed and a b a l a n c e struck at t h e end of e a c h year, on t h e first day of September, a n d t h e b a l a n c e s h e e t be r e p o r t e d to t h e T r u s t e e s on t h e r e g u l a r meeting held in t h a t m o n t h . 3. T h e leading accounts will be t h o s e of c u r r e n t e x p e n s e s and State appropriations. T h e account of State appropriations will be c h a r g e d with all s u m s paid out from this fund by order of the Trustees, and credited with all s u m s received on t h i s a c c o u n t from the State T r e a s u r e r . W h e n closed, t h e balance, if any exists, will be c a r r i e d forward to a n e w account. The account of c u r r e n t e x p e n s e s will h a v e subordinated to it such a n d so m a n y o t h e r s a s m a y be found desirable for convenience of classification, as B o a r d e x p e n s e s , salaries for instruction, fuel a n d lights, buildings and g r o u n d s , t h e several d e p a r t m e n t s , t h e laboratories, s t u d e n t s ' fees, etc., e t c . E a c h of t h e s e subordinate accounts will be c h a r g e d with t h e m o n e y s paid out on its account, and credited with t h e funds received for its u s e .
