T H E H A L F WAY HOUSE. The Half Way House, so called, on the line of t h e horse railway, a n d the land adjacent, n e a r the n o r t h w e s t corner of t h e a r b o r e t u m , h a s been before b r o u g h t to y o u r attention, a n d some negotiations were h a d for the p u r c h a s e of t h e building a n d t h e g r o u n d it w a s supposed to occupy. Since your last meeting the house h a s been burned. F r o m some investigations I h a d before m a d e . i t h a d seemed to m e t h a t t h e building really stood on t h e University p r o p erty, and t h a t t h e builder was in error a s to t h e lot which he supposed h e h a d purchased. T h e deed by which t h e University holds t h e west half of t h e west half of t h e n o r t h e a s t q u a r t e r of section 18, & c , t h a t is t h e g r o u n d of t h e a b o r e t u m , college c a m p u s , etc., h a s b e e n e x a m i n e d by competent legal counsel, a n d I a m advised t h a t t h e c o r n e r lot, being t h e s o u t h east corner of Wright street a n d t h e r i g h t of w a y of t h e horse-railway, is t h e p r o p e r t y of the University, a n d t h a t t h e lot b o u g h t by Mr. E u s h lies next east of t h e c o r n e r lot. This lot h e h a s sold to the horse-railway company, a n d I have a communication from Mr. F. G. J a q u e s , its secretary, offering it to the University, u p o n t e r m s specified. T h e University should certainly have the lot if it c a n be obtained at r e a s o n a b l e t e r m s . If secured, t h e line of lots south of t h e horse railway will all be included in the arboretum. ELECTRICAL APPARATUS. The p u r c h a s e of a d y n a m o electrical g e n e r a t o r for t h e joint use of t h e chemical a n d physical laboratories h a s long been desired, but h a s b e e n postponed from time to t i m e for sufficient r e a s o n s . With a view to this pT r c h a s e , t h e State appropriation for t h e l a b o r a u tories for t h e c u r r e n t y e a r h a s b e e n draw n u p o n sparingly, a n d t h e time s e e m s to have c o m e w h e n we c a n safely m a k e this outlay. The m a c h i n e is Avanted primarily for experi m e n t s in t h e physical laboratory, both for lighting a n d m e a s u r e m e n t , a n d in t h e chemical laboratory for electro-metallurgy. W h e n n o t in use in t h e s e w a y s it m a y be u s e d to a m o d e r a t e degree for illumination. F r o m investigations m a d e I believe t h a t a m a c h i n e suitable for our p u r p o s e s , with t h e n e c e s s a r y a t t a c h m e n t s to a n engine, line, a n d fittings, will cost about $500. I ask authority to u s e t h a t s u m for t h e purpose. I would advise t h a t authority be given to e x p e n d t h e balance of t h e appropriation for such a p p a r a t u s as m a y seem most needed. T H E GYMNASIUM. T h e attention of t h e s t u d e n t s to t h i s work is i n c r e a s i n g . T h e m o n e y appropriate*! a y e a r since h a s been usefully expended. I a s k a farther appropriation of $100 for this p u r p o s e with authority to u s e a portion of it in c a u s i n g t h e floor of the platform in t h e drill hall to b e r e d u c e d to one level, instead of being r a i s e d in steps a s now. I n t h i s way room m a y b e m a d e for p r i m a r y a p p a r a t u s not in t h e w a y of t h e drill a n d not requiring, as now, to be cons t a n t l y removed. T h e c h a n g e is a simple one a n d should not cost more t h a n $20.
