T h e y w o r k e d mostly on t h e E u r o p e a n L a r c h and White A s h ; in some i n s t a n c e s girdling t h e r o o t s entirely, from one a n d a half i n c h e s below t h e surface, several inches d o w n ; a n d owing to t o t h e season being so dry. the t r e e s could not r e p a i r t h e injury. White Ash two feet h i g h w e r e girdled in t h e s a m e m a n n e r . I n the case of t h e Austrian a n d Scotch P i n e s we att r i b u t e losing so m a n y mostly to the d r y n e s s of the s e a s o n . The Scotch P i n e were n e v e r t r a n s p l a n t e d before, which we t h i n k was one c a u s e of so m a n y dying. C h e s t n u t s were injured s o m e w h a t by the grub."
