Presented by Dr. Walter Hurley Energy Needs of Sled Dogs 150 ASL 11:00 pm Friday Breeding practices over the past few hundred years have resulted in the wide diversity of dog breeds. Differences in body size and other physical characteristics, activity level, and age influence energy requirement, estimating the energy needs of any specific dog may be difficult. Severe environmental conditions also affect the amount of energy needed to maintain body weight. Racing sled dogs are exposed to extremely low temperatures and high activity levels for days or weeks at a time. Thus, estimating and meeting the energy needs of these amazing athletes is very challenging.
